# Getting Started

## How to set up Heurio

_Total time: PT5M_

1. **Add the Heurio Chrome extension** — Install Heurio from the Chrome Web Store. Heurio is a free Chrome extension for pinning visual feedback on any live website.
2. **Pin the extension to Chrome's toolbar** — Open Chrome's extension menu (the puzzle icon) and click the pin next to Heurio so the icon is always visible for future reviews.
3. **Leave comments directly on a website** — Open a website, click the Heurio icon to enable the overlay, then click any UI element to add a comment (a 'heurio') with a note, suggestion, severity, and guideline reference.
4. **Invite teammates to your project** — Open the Share popup, enter teammate email addresses, and assign 'Can edit' or 'Can view' permissions so everyone can review the same project.

> **Quick start:** install the [Heurio Chrome extension](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/heurio-ux-check-visual-fe/pjdbofhiijhapnmpgilkeammkanglfdj), pin it, click any element on a live site, and leave your first comment — no signup required for solo use.

## Why use Heurio for website reviews

Heurio replaces emailed screenshots, Loom recordings, and scattered Slack messages with structured, visual feedback pinned directly to the live website. Each "heurio" captures the element, the device, a screenshot, your note, a severity, and an optional [heuristic evaluation](/ux-glossary#heuristic-evaluation) reference — so designers, developers, QA, and PMs see the same context every time.

The four steps above ([Add](#step-1), [Pin](#step-2), [Comment](#step-3), [Invite](#step-4)) are the entire setup. The video shows the same flow:

## What to do next

- Try [adding your first comment on a website](/docs/how-to-use-heurio/add-a-comment-on-a-website) — the core workflow in 30 seconds.
- Run a structured [heuristic evaluation](/docs/how-to-use-heurio/heuristic-evaluation) using Heurio's built-in guidelines (Nielsen, Dieter Rams, Shneiderman, and more).
- Explore the full list of [built-in heuristic guidelines](/guidelines) you can run against any live site.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Heurio free?

Yes. The Heurio Chrome extension is free to install and includes the core comment, screenshot, and heuristic guideline features. Paid plans add team management, seats, and admin features for larger organizations.

### Do I need to create an account before installing the extension?

No. You can install the Heurio Chrome extension and start leaving comments immediately. Creating a free account is only required when you want to invite teammates, switch devices, or open the web app.

### Which browsers does Heurio support?

Heurio runs as a Chrome extension and works in Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers (Microsoft Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera) that support Chrome Web Store extensions.

### Does Heurio work on localhost or password-protected sites?

Yes. Because Heurio runs locally in your browser, it can review any URL you can open — including localhost, staging environments, and password-protected pages. Comments are captured as screenshots and synced to your Heurio project.

### Can I use Heurio in Chrome's Incognito mode?

Yes, but you have to enable it explicitly in Chrome's extension settings. See the 'Heurio in Incognito Mode' doc for the toggle.
